Estimates: The First Postpress Process

Surprises are great for parties, but not in the quick-turnaround world of the bindery. The best way to ensure your projects are produced to your exact specifications is to include all pertinent details of your job on your request for quote. The estimate we return to you will be the most accurate one possible.

When requesting an estimate for a case-bound book, consider the turned-edge cover wrap, endsheet and board specifications in addition to "basics" such as trim size and page count.

Accurate estimates help finishers order any necessary materials, create an aggressive production schedule and share ideas and suggestions with customers. While all requests for quote should include the basics - quantity, trim size, stock details, etc - there are some less obvious details that we also need:

Shipping - It may sound backwards, but starting at the delivery of your finished project makes the best planning sense. Include not only final project deadlines, but packaging requirements as well. This might include quantities per box, specific box dimensions and shrink wrapping if necessary.

Endsheets - An often forgotten but crucial element of hardcover book manufacturing, endsheets are the first and last pages of the book block and are glued to both inside covers. Many customers prefer to supply their own endsheets because it allows them to place images and text on the inside covers of the book. Let your finisher know if you'll be supplying endsheets or expect them from the bindery.

Coatings - Postpress coatings such as film laminate can ensure long-term protection for book products. Let your finisher know if your project requires laminate or other coatings in the estimating stage. Waiting until production begins can delay delivery and increase costs.
