HELPFUL TIPS

Adhesive Case Binding A sturdy, affordable hardcover option

With adhesive case binding, decorative options abound, as shown with this leather, turn-edged cover with foil stamping.

One of the advantages of case binding is its compatibility with almost any book block. This gives printers and designers a great deal of flexibility when matching the construction of a book with the habits of end users. While sewn book blocks offer the highest strength and durability, not all applications require that level of construction.

One alternative is adhesive case binding, which combines the economy of perfect binding with the protection of a hardcover case. Adhesive case binding is popular for projects such as cookbooks, manuals, diaries and promotional materials. Here are a few quick planning tips when preparing books for adhesive case binding.

Planning Tips
Grain-parallel is critical:
Print your signatures with the grain direction of all pages parallel to the bind to prevent wavy, weakened spines. Pages will expand after binding as moisture enters the paper fibers. Paper grain bound perpendicular to the spine will be restricted from this natural expansion, causing distortion to the spine and individual pages. This can result in a misshapen and damaged book.

Plenty of cover choices:
As with Smyth sewn book blocks, cases for adhesive-bound books can be decorated with book cloth, printed paper, imitation leather and many other materials. Foil stamping, embossing, debossing and film laminating can all be used to decorate and further protect your hardcover cases.
