HELPFUL TIPS

Planning a Split Binding Project

A printed, laminated cover wrap, as seen on this casebound book, is a popular choice for a split run of hard and soft cover books.

When the needs of end users require books with both hard and soft cover versions, there’s no need to choose between the two. A split production run can put the right book into the hands of each user. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when planning such a project.

Signature Preparation
Applications consisting of text pages with heavy ink and/or coating coverage will likely require Smyth sewing, which can be used with either a hardcover case or drawn-on soft cover (also known as a flexi-cover). Smyth sewing provides ample strength and durability for adhesive-averse stocks.

If your split binding project will consist of Smyth sewn and adhesive bound versions, signatures for both styles have slightly different requirements. When preparing signatures for Smyth sewing, they will not require a grind-off margin at the spines. Sixteen-page (or nested eight-page) and 12-page forms with a letter fold are ideal. If you must use eight-page forms, the stock weight should be at least 80 lbs. text to ensure proper thread tension and to prevent tearing.

Cover Material Choices
Pease Bindery recommends a printed turned-edge cover wrap, allowing both hard and soft cover versions to have closely-matching cover designs. Imitation leather cover wraps are also popular, as they offer enhanced value and exclusivity to hard cover versions.
