HELPFUL TIPS

Maximum and Minimum Guidelines for Bookbinding at Pease

All of us at Pease Bindery want to help you finish your bookbinding projects in a time and cost efficient way. Pease Bindery can manually manufacture books outside of the standard minimums and maximums listed below. We are providing this information to keep your project costs at a minimum.

It is in everyone’s best interest to be on the same page before job specifications are finalized. Automated production reduces costs and means we must adhere to machine minimums and maximums to complete your project most efficiently. When jobs require manual processes, costs can increase significantly. Contact the bookbinding experts at Pease Bindery for an early planning discussion as soon as you know your preliminary job specifications. Many times, a small specification tweak can yield surprisingly large time and cost savings.

Perfect Binding Minimums and Maximums
Perfect binding, sometimes called adhesive binding, is the process of using spine glue to create a “book block.” Signatures are gathered together and the spine edge is subjected to a grinding wheel to expose paper fibers, increasing surface area for better glue adhesion. Pease Bindery can bind perfect bound books as thin as 1/16” and as thick as 2-7/16”.

Smyth Sewing Minimums and Maximums
Smyth sewing is the process of gathering signatures and sewing through the spine fold to create a long lasting durable book block capable of withstanding significant repeat usage. Pease Bindery’s Smyth sewing machines can produce books as thin as 3/32” and as thick as 2-3/4”.

It’s a Hard Case to Crack
Regardless of selected binding style, decisions need to be made about your project’s cover. Pease Bindery offers both soft covers and decorative ultra-durable hard case bound covers. Case binding can be performed on books as small and thin as 4” x 4” x 3/32” and on books as large and thick as 10-3/4” x 14-1/2” x 2-3/4”.

The Pease Advantage
Pease Bindery differentiates itself by offering customers a truly personal level of service. These tips are an example of the pre-planning help we're more than happy to offer customers on their Smyth sewn, perfect bound and other related projects.
